So I became known for it, and every time I left, people asked me to keep sharing. And now for everyone who likes to keep track of my readings, I present this blog!Fidele Hagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01955281892312229792noreply@blogger.comBlogger17125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5719674239681921143.post-77951308535676406292015-05-23T23:26:00.001-07:002015-05-28T08:52:25.459-07:00Photography for dummies who have a Canon 5D<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
A year and a half ago, when we went to Japan, my husband got me from Shibuya, the shopping district in Tokyo, a brand new Canon 5D mark III (for those who don't know it's a professional cam, good enough to film a TV ad!)<br />
<br />
Since then, I've been buying books and magazines and downloading manuals online, and joining photography workshop trips… but somehow I always felt like nothing would work unless I learn the basics from scratch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
That's why I have joined the Nikon school for beginners: they teach the basics of photography for dummies such as myself and are kind enough to introduce me to my Canon! (Yes, Canon should've thought of this)<br />
<br />
So because I enjoy sharing in this blog everything new that I learn, I will share with you everything that I learned and will learn in my classes, perhaps they could benefit another dummy like me.<br />

<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span><span style="color: #cc0000;">General knowledge about photography </span></h3>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #666666;">(bits and pieces from here and there):</span></h4>
<br />
For those of you who heard so much about the <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">Leica</span></b> but aren't sure what it is, well let's put it this way: If you want to offer someone who appreciates photography a really precious gift, go for the Leica.<br />
It is the Bentley in a world of Kias. It's a German hand made camera that offers impressively easy handling, extreme robustness and excellent imaging quality.<br />
<br />
The term <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>SLR</b></span> refers to Single-Lens Reflex that uses a mirror and prism system that permit the photographer to view through the lens and see exactly what will be captured.<br />
<br />
A <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">DSLR</span></b> is a digital single-lens reflex camera (also called digital SLR): it's a digital camera combining the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor.<br />
<br />
The first commercial <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">Polaroid</span></b> instant camera was unveiled in 1948 by the American Edwin Land, and it wasn't until 1963 that Polaroid introduced the instant <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>color film</b></span> despite the early attempts in the 1840's for colour photography. Baring in mind that KODAK introduced the first modern colour film which was called Kodachrome in 1935.<br />
<br />
Speaking of Kodak, it was Steven Sasson who invented the <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">first digital camera</span></b> at Eastman Kodak in 1975.<br />
<br />
Photography as we know it today, on a <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">mobile phone</span></b>, was introduced by Philippe kahn in 1997 who inserted the shoot and share camera into a Motorola Startac, the most popular mobile phone at the time. (he was eager to share a picture of his newborn with family and friends, hence the invention that took place on his daughter's birthday, on June 11, 1997).<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The <b>SENSOR</b>, which is the most important part of a digital camera, comes in different sizes:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">DX format </span></b>and the <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>FX format</b></span>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The DX sensor has the smaller size, about the same size as the old APS-C film format. the lens area is smaller because the DX sensor captures a smaller field of view. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
the FX sensor is the same size as a 35 mm film, but it is more expensive to make. That's why the more expensive/ professional DSLR cams come with a FX sensor.</div>

To get introduced to other buttons, we must learn the camera features, starting with the focus.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Focus</span></h3>
There are 3 ways to focus on cam:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b><u>1- Manual focus</u></b></span><br />
To focus manually, first make sure you have the <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>AF / MF </b></span>switch on your lens set to MF (Manual Focus)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJqD9Brw1tHioJY3-bXMHhiDRRhkxEckoFgguj6Ksuya1wa_08BpmqvY0h7d6xGpWmu1zoO-blUzUvwAKt5y8KRRhVe-3jhlbW3HAVeNqho1FWK9dAFPFYGRwPlA4DrcJ1CnAH9nhQn3BF/s1600/Chris-Gampat-The-Phoblographer-Canon-35mm-f2-IS-product-images-5-of-7ISO-2001-60-sec-at-f-2.8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJqD9Brw1tHioJY3-bXMHhiDRRhkxEckoFgguj6Ksuya1wa_08BpmqvY0h7d6xGpWmu1zoO-blUzUvwAKt5y8KRRhVe-3jhlbW3HAVeNqho1FWK9dAFPFYGRwPlA4DrcJ1CnAH9nhQn3BF/s320/Chris-Gampat-The-Phoblographer-Canon-35mm-f2-IS-product-images-5-of-7ISO-2001-60-sec-at-f-2.8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Use the front ring on the lens to focus manually. Once you reach enough sharpness on the object you're focusing on, turn the ring a bit left, a bit right to make sure that this is the maximum sharpness you can get.<br />
(You have 2 rings on your lens, one of them is to zoom in and out, the other is to focus manually)<br />
<br />
To use the 3 other focus methods, don't forget to with the MF to AF button on your lens.<br />

To access it in the menu, press the AF. Drive button shown in the above 1st picture. Once the AF mode menu opens, let's chose <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>ONE SHOT</b></span>.<br />
If, like me, you have noticed photographers in events point their camera at you, then move it around then point at you again before taking the picture, that's because they are using this feature.<br />
The ONE SHOT is probably the most used method. It allows you to press the shutter half way down, the camera will focus and hold that focal distance until the picture is taken. You move around before taking the picture in order to reframe, while keeping the focus on the same object or person, then you fully press the shutter button in order to take that picture.<br />
Try it, it's super easy.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><u><b>3- Continuous Focus </b></u></span><br />
<br />
That's the <b><span style="color: #45818e;">AI SERVO</span></b> feature in the AF menu.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjDGjzEARXnr-qojvbGB6ZzdGcYKu6sq1XZStwYqK7hveiHj4_iKTHu84QdW9j4XPcXzIU4zVGRLYZyReOcM6coUtB-IZiD8hTiCOxJ5lvzBPQcbwTU8q_d467lU6imYwKag5V45MuWT-c/s1600/AI+SERVO.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjDGjzEARXnr-qojvbGB6ZzdGcYKu6sq1XZStwYqK7hveiHj4_iKTHu84QdW9j4XPcXzIU4zVGRLYZyReOcM6coUtB-IZiD8hTiCOxJ5lvzBPQcbwTU8q_d467lU6imYwKag5V45MuWT-c/s1600/AI+SERVO.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This method is good especially for shooting kids: when they're moving it follows them.<br />
AI SERVO tracks focus on moving subjects as your subject moves closer or further away from your camera, it constantly updates focus to keep the subject as sharp as possible.<br />
<br />
The only disadvantage of this feature is that it can be slow sometimes, and it consumes a lot of battery.<br />
<br />
<br />
<u><b><span style="color: #3d85c6;">4- Automatic Auto-focus</span></b></u><br />
<br />
That's the<span style="color: #76a5af;"><b> AI FOCUS</b></span> feature next to ONE SHOT on the AF menu.<br />
The AI FOCUS switches the AF mode from ONE SHOT to AI SERVO automatically if the subject starts moving.<br />
After the subject is focused in the ONE SHOT AF mode, if it starts moving, the camera will detect the movement and change the AF mode automatically to AI SERVO AF.<br />
This functionality it offers makes it the most recommended method to use focus.<br />
<br />
In different cameras, the <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>AF assist lamp</b></span> assists the auto-focus, but unfortunately Canon 5D mark II and III does not provide this built in feature, and therefore disappoints photographers sometimes with the performance in low light.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">The three pillars of photography</span></h3>
<br />
Now comes the most important part you need to know to understand the main camera features.<br />
I particularly love how this part was explained to me because using the terms "<span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>shutter</b></span>", "<span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>aperture</b></span>" and "<span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>ISO</b></span>" was too mathematical for me, until made logical and simple for the dummy that I am:<br />
<br />
3 things control the light when taking a picture:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4zj9AUFfKJhpjgtmVtFLfXFJohASxOYAW5_xA4OC1539-wD-Yowhf55tmcW0MVwct5LhUy2jJJORtBmrh325PZbza4NmsNTLmixEZePR4i8qOuUeoqvadnIr1FQ3x3MQswLN4yun_bvo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-05-25+at+10.16.24+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4zj9AUFfKJhpjgtmVtFLfXFJohASxOYAW5_xA4OC1539-wD-Yowhf55tmcW0MVwct5LhUy2jJJORtBmrh325PZbza4NmsNTLmixEZePR4i8qOuUeoqvadnIr1FQ3x3MQswLN4yun_bvo/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-05-25+at+10.16.24+AM.png" width="400" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4zj9AUFfKJhpjgtmVtFLfXFJohASxOYAW5_xA4OC1539-wD-Yowhf55tmcW0MVwct5LhUy2jJJORtBmrh325PZbza4NmsNTLmixEZePR4i8qOuUeoqvadnIr1FQ3x3MQswLN4yun_bvo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-05-25+at+10.16.24+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig4zj9AUFfKJhpjgtmVtFLfXFJohASxOYAW5_xA4OC1539-wD-Yowhf55tmcW0MVwct5LhUy2jJJORtBmrh325PZbza4NmsNTLmixEZePR4i8qOuUeoqvadnIr1FQ3x3MQswLN4yun_bvo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-05-25+at+10.16.24+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b style="color: #3d85c6;"><u><br /></u></b>
<b style="color: #3d85c6;"><u>1- Shutter Speed:</u></b><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">(Camera in TV mode)</span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #666666;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></span></span>
In simple words, a <b><span style="color: #76a5af;">camera shutter</span></b> is a curtain in front of the sensor that stays close until the camera fires. When the camera fires, the shutter opens and fully exposes the sensor to the light that passes through the lens aperture.<br />
The shutter closes immediately after the sensor is done collecting the light.<br />
That's why we call the button that fires the camera "shutter". because it triggers the shutter to open and close.<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #76a5af;"><b>shutter speed</b></span> (or exposure time) determines for how long will my image sensor be exposed to light:<br />
<br />
The <span style="color: #e69138;">faster</span> the shutter speed, the <span style="color: #e69138;">shorter the time</span> the sensor will be exposed to light: it will <span style="color: #e69138;">freeze action</span> completely:<br />

<span style="color: #999999;">These images were shot with a slow shutter speed, hence the motion blur effect. (waterfall shot: 5 second exposure).</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">Landscape photographers intentionally use slow shutter speeds to create a sense of motion on waterfalls while keeping everything else in focus.</span><br />
<br />
So the shutter is responsible for creating dramatic effects by either freezing action or blurring motion.<br />
Different shutter speeds will give you different effects.<br />
<br />
<br />
Object in movement => slow shutter speed<br />
Still object => fast shutter<br />
<br />
very slow movement/ objects at night or in dim environment => slow shutter with Tripod.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is a special shooting mode that opens the shutter for as long as you hold the shutter button down.<br />
You can use it to take a picture of a lightening: you keep your finger on the shutter until there's a lightening then you release it.<br />
The Bulb is also used for long exposure photography.<br />
The longest shutter speed available is 30". But sometimes that's not enough. that's where the bulb setting comes in. Bulb will allow the shutter to stay open for as long as you hold the shutter button down.<br />
I'm not an expert on this neither have I tried it, we can explore it more as soon as I know more about it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b style="color: #3d85c6;"><u>2- Aperture: </u></b><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">(Camera in AV mode)</span><br />
<br />
The Aperture as shown in the figure refers to the opening of the lens's diaphragm through which light passes. It is calibrated in f/stops and is written as numbers such as 1.4 , 2 , 2.8 , 4 , 5.6 , 8 , 11 and 16.<br />
<br />
To understand Aperture, it has the same logic as the pupil of the eye:<br />
When the eye is exposed to a strong light, it becomes smaller.<br />
When it's darker and the eye is exposed to less light, it becomes bigger.<br />
<br />
LARGE PUPIL SIZE = LARGE APERTURE<br />
SMALL PUPIL SIZE = SMALL APERTURE<br />
<br />
BUT:<br />
the bigger the aperture number (f/64), the smaller the hole is.<br />
The smaller the number (f/1.4), the bigger the hole.<br />
<br />
SO:<br />
<br />
LARGE PUPIL SIZE = LARGE APERTURE = SMALLER f<br />
SMALL PUPIL SIZE = SMALL APERTURE = BIGGER f<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigGuFZVNsO240U9Y9y90ZrEveOF16RjURrn3bDQvYLFqyQM6z6NIBwZy9uVKp7xT1v8BFiiFWcRjReKRhC6cDqLad_FQf1LKZetbUBEYXxL8zS_23aNW_RDdy-U5ZRQDvwbB5Jb5SdE6WL/s1600/Aperture-f-Number.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="158" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigGuFZVNsO240U9Y9y90ZrEveOF16RjURrn3bDQvYLFqyQM6z6NIBwZy9uVKp7xT1v8BFiiFWcRjReKRhC6cDqLad_FQf1LKZetbUBEYXxL8zS_23aNW_RDdy-U5ZRQDvwbB5Jb5SdE6WL/s400/Aperture-f-Number.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The importance of Aperture is that it either adds a dimension to a photograph by blurring the background or magically brings everything in focus:<br />
<br />
The size of the aperture has a direct impact on the depth of field, which is the area of the image that appears sharp.<br />
A large f number such as f/32 (small aperture) will bring all foreground and background objects in focus.<br />
A small f number such as f/1.4 (big aperture) will isolate the foreground from the background by making the foreground object sharp and the background blurry.<br />
<br />
you can memorise it as such:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Small aperture => big f => sharp background</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Big aperture => small f => blurred background</span><br />
<br />
<br />
Every lens has a limit on how large or small the aperture can get.<br />
The maximum aperture of the lens is more important than the minimum, because it shows the speed of the lens.<br />
In my case, I have the 24-105mm. The maximum aperture is F/4. It's slower than a lens that has an f/1.2 or f/1.4 aperture.<br />
So my lens is not very well suited for low light photography.<br />
Why is this important? because maximum aperture means that the lens can pass through more light, and hence the camera can capture images faster in low-light situations.<br />
<br />
A larger maximum aperture = ability to isolate subjects from the background.<br />
<br />
All modern cameras provide at least f/16 minimum aperture (mine provides f/22), which is more than enough for everyday photography needs.<br />
<br />
The below aperture and shutter speed combinations result in the same exposure:<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">Achieving the correct exposure is like collecting rain in a bucket.</span><span style="line-height: 21px;">While the rate of rainfall is uncontrollable, 3 factors remain under your control:</span><span style="line-height: 21px;">- The bucket's width</span><span style="line-height: 21px;">- the duration you leave it in the rain</span><span style="line-height: 21px;">- The quantity of rain you want to collect.</span><span style="line-height: 21px;">You just need to ensure you don't collect little (underexposed), or too much (overexposed).</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">There are many different combinations of width, time and quantity that will achieve this.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">i.e, for the same quantity of rain you want to collect, you can get away with less time and a wide bucket. OR for the same duration you can have a really narrow bucket with less water.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">In photography:</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">Aperture (f) = width of the bucket</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">Shutter speed = duration you leave it in the rain</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">ISO = quantity of rain you're collecting.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">And just like the rainfall rate is out of your control, so is the natural light for a photographer.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">The ISO speed determines how sensitive the camera is to incoming light.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">It also correlates with how much the exposure increases/ decreases.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">But unlike aperture and shutter, a low ISO is almost always desirable, because higher ISO means more noise.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">That's why we only increase ISO when the desired aperture and shutter speed aren't otherwise obtainable.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: decimal;">Evaluative metering (most recommended! It <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">makes it easier to measure exposure with off-centre subjects)</span></li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: decimal;">Partial metering (<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">it works well for metering brightly lit subjects against dark backgrounds)</span></li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: decimal;">Spot metering (mostly used to avoid contre-jour or when you have a bright subject against dark background)</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: decimal;">Center-weighted average (subjects in the centre of the frame, light behind them)</li>
</ol>

<b style="color: #3d85c6;"><u>Exposure compensation</u></b><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></span></span>
When using an automatic exposure mode, the easiest way is to use the camera's exposure compensation function. To use it, we just turn the camera's quick control dial (on my cam), this way we can dial in exposure compensation while looking through the viewfinder.<br />
<br />
If the photo is underexposed, we can increase exposure by a stop or 2, if overexposed, we can use exposure compensation to reduce the exposure.<br />

Considering that I'm someone with so many ideas, but always get cold feet when it comes to execution, I'm always on the lookout for success stories and facts about growing businesses.<br />
<br />
This time, Evan Carmichael wrote an article worth sharing, about not needing a lot of money to grow your business.<br />
He specifically tackled the cost of a logo, and even though I'm a designer myself, he dazzled me with some facts that I never knew existed!<br />
<br />
In his words:<br />
<br />
<div class="definition-parent" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; padding: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="article no-image" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; width: 100%px;"><tbody style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: #999999;">You might look at big companies like Pepsi, BBC, and BP spending millions of dollars to get their logos designed and think, how can I compete?</span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="color: #999999;">You don’t need to have deep pockets to create a meaningful logo.</span></div>

And… far from content marketing and back to traditional advertising, here's my latest piece of work:<br />
A TV commercial for Yellow pages featuring a Lebanese family in a Lebanese setup being filmed by a TV reporter.<br />
The family having decided to spend a little vacation together, they each use his own Yellow Pages medium to find the idea destination: the book, the website, the mobile application, the YEP books and finally the call centre 1366<br />

Let me start with the bottom line:<br />
If you are narrow minded to "traditional" marketing techniques, your chances of succeeding with your brand promotion are also narrow.<br />
<br />
In 2014, Content is critical to creating successful campaigns and promoting your business.<br />
<br />

<span style="color: #990000;">Facts:</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">- 27,000 pieces of content are shared each day.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">- 90% of brands market with content.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">- 75% of marketers think branded content is more effective than printed advertising, direct mailing and PR.</span><span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span><br />

<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;">Is it clear now why are we moving towards content marketing?</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">More than 350 million people read blogs.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">Blogs give websites more indexed pages and indexed links, which means they help the websites show up in search engine results.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">So blogs are the most valuable content type of marketing. </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">So if you're wondering why a website is not enough anymore, why do most brands blog an awful lot, that's because they get 5 times more traffic than brands that don't blog and report 97% more leads.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #134f5c;">Think about it:</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">What do you see most on your Facebook or Twitter feed?</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">Shared links, right? but not just any links... what is shared is content from reputable sources. and you find yourself sharing some of that content too, don't you often do that? </span><span style="color: #999999;">Because you listen to recommendations from friends.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">99% of people are sharing via multiple platforms of social media, which results in a purchase.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">Not only do marketers use social media to distribute content, but actually users prefer to connect with brands on Facebook.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">If you look closely on people's behaviours (including yours) they spend more than 80% of their time online where content can be shared.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;">Do they follow brands because they love advertising?</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">Hell no!</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">They do it because the content is interesting. They prefer to know a company via articles over ads.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">They prefer a company who's interested in building a relationship with them rather than giving them full-text content. If they were to read, they read from a brand they are interested in and therefore they feel more positive about it.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">What does this tell us?</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">People want to be in control of the content they wish to receive:</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">86% of people skip TV commercials</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">44% of direct mail is never opened and </span><span style="color: #999999;">91% of people unsubscribe from them.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">Coming to know this, would you still spend a fortune on TV commercials and traditional media?</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">Here's a simple example:</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">If you're planning a trip to Paris, are you more likely to check commercials of hotels in magazines (or even online) or do you check forums and blogs where people rate the hotels and share their reviews?</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #134f5c;">Switch to content already!</span></h2>
<span style="color: #999999;">Marketers are spending nearly 1/3 of their budgets on content marketing, and they say they will increase their content marketing spending in the next year, baring in mind that </span><span style="color: #990000;">it costs almost 60% less than traditional marketing.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #134f5c;">And make your content interesting!</span></h2>
<span style="color: #999999;">90% of the information assimilated by the brain are visual. Aren't you more interested in articles with images or video? In fact people respond better to images than plain text, and 3 times more to video.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">How many videos do you watch daily on your smart phone? </span><span style="color: #999999;">At least once a day, right? Even my mom shares with me a video daily.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;">Why do we invest so much in a website design? Because it gives the brand or company more credibility.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">Finally, it's OK to be traditional in 2014, as long as traditional means content marketing.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: left;">

I read an article this morning by Tara Hunt, and it answered a lot of arguments that I had with my clients.<br />
<br />
I have always believed that Social media helps create awareness around your brand and makes people more familiar with it.<br />
It would drive sales in the case of promotions, and still this only works with popular brands rather than brands that address high society and elite people, who sell products for at least $5,000 a piece!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUOb60Z4naxUZmQSUMBgqXkWjF4xwo3cgc042QCJAitHcqtTJBBd5VWBKCjFs4gwvJTPj7zYqj6hgxYW5rkzZPNQ1PHxEVHy4xDuBfjsnPR5PEwzg9N5q5_bq6Day88TDTDh4xAraljzc/s1600/15ae0c5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUOb60Z4naxUZmQSUMBgqXkWjF4xwo3cgc042QCJAitHcqtTJBBd5VWBKCjFs4gwvJTPj7zYqj6hgxYW5rkzZPNQ1PHxEVHy4xDuBfjsnPR5PEwzg9N5q5_bq6Day88TDTDh4xAraljzc/s320/15ae0c5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Social media definitely serves the purpose when a customer is trying to look you up.<br />
But when a customer is making the purchase decision, he needs to hear about it and talk about it.<br />
And this cannot be done solely by posting on social media or by conducting paid campaigns.<br />
For that we need to create a strong Word of Mouth.<br />
<br />
Hunt says <span style="color: #cc0000;">YOU CANNOT FORCE WORD OF MOUTH</span>.<br />
<br />
It's not that a social media strategy is not working, nor that you social media team isn't effective.<br />
The fact is some stuff just don't spread. they do not appeal to people or represent something they need or something new they just discovered and have the need to share it.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">So why pay for online marketing when the results aren't guaranteed?</span><br />
<br />
It HELPS with the sales. it is not the key ingredient that DRIVES sales.<br />
<br />
- To start, as I already mentioned, <span style="color: #0b5394;">it helps people find you</span>. And you do want to be found, otherwise you're losing big.<br />
- <span style="color: #0b5394;">You will have more credibility</span>, provided your branding is done by a professional, and is not a cheap design.<br />
- It helps us <span style="color: #0b5394;">measure how people interact with your product</span>: did they see the video you have posted? if not, wasn't it interesting enough? if they saw it, did they like it or were they indifferent? Did they like it enough to share it and talk about it?<br />
- It allows<span style="color: #0b5394;"> people to give you feedback</span>: they may like or criticise, either way this should help you work on your brand or service and make it better.<br />
- It helps you<span style="color: #0b5394;"> create a relationship with your customer</span>, the thing you can never do with a print ad or TV commercial. Through social media you can find out a lot about your customers and hence bond with them.<br />
<br />
Most importantly, before starting to ask for ROI, this takes time people.<br />
Social media definitely needs a strategy. You cannot hire junior people just to "post a couple of things" on Facebook. And you cannot expect immediate results.<br />
It's the process of interacting with fans, get to know their likes and dislikes, which post do they interact with the most, which conversation topics are interesting to them, etc…<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Actually the ROI of social media is not money.</span><br />
<br />
It's rather far from materialistic:<br />
- SM helps you LISTEN.<br />
- SM helps you seize the opportunities and trends that people are talking about to start a conversation yourself.<br />
- SM helps you build a COMMUNITY rather than a customer base. It is the community that drives the word of mouth and not the customers.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
So bottom line, have a long breath. Patience is the key. Stop expecting immediate results. That's not how it works.<br />
<br />
<br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 14px;">This week's most circulating viral video was a well-orchestrated video of a woman who uses <a href="http://www.thefreedictionary.com/telekinesis" target="_blank">telekinesis</a> to destroy a coffee shop after someone spills coffee on her computer.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 14px;"><br /></span>

I have also enjoyed watching another umm... vine?<br />
Burt's bees launched <span style="color: #b45f06;">#6secondclassics</span> to reinforce its natural positioning.<br />
<br />
It consists of a series of vines that re-inect classic stories.<br />
Burt's Bees are a personal care brand. They made their debut with this series of vines featuring extremely shortened versions of literary classics to promote their line of mainstray beauty products.<br />
The main characters are the chapsticks and hand creams dressed up in period togs.<br />
<br />
Check them out here:<br />

I often read about new blogs and applications, but this one seems to be picking up and growing really fast!<br />
I'm talking about <a href="https://www.sociatag.com/" target="_blank">Sociatag</a>.<br />
As described on <a href="http://www.menaopportunities.info/2013/10/sociatag-another-success-story-in-making.html#.Ul15yBbralI">menaopportunities.info</a>, it's a startup that offers an innovative solution to offline marketing via social networks.<br />
You can connect and share your experiences in exhibitions, workshops, seminars with your friends.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbHboiHHV88rviGI2KbHLIc9b5IcrzTNVxwBYrkBGtb5C_yVJQYCkZGw4WGh00D3dgVxbfxfbzfBp_0EwCOtJqy8fZEa-TXbMBXN7cVcN5EVmKCM0-5NoHLh3YmUr3_3yOvbWNseL4UawB/s1600/s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbHboiHHV88rviGI2KbHLIc9b5IcrzTNVxwBYrkBGtb5C_yVJQYCkZGw4WGh00D3dgVxbfxfbzfBp_0EwCOtJqy8fZEa-TXbMBXN7cVcN5EVmKCM0-5NoHLh3YmUr3_3yOvbWNseL4UawB/s400/s.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>So how does it work?</b></span></h4>
you install societal "boxes" and brand them following your brand's guidelines.<br />
These boxes can be linked to Facebook, twitter, Foursquare and LinkedIn.<br />
This way, you can follow Facebook posts, check-ins, pictures, tweets, or even follow companies, join groups, bookmark job postings or simply share posts with your network, etc...<br />
<br />
Now here comes to nice part:<br />
- Rating boxes are available to get direct feedback from users.<br />
- More and more social networks are being added.<br />
- You can conduct promotions on Sociatag to drive footfall to your business. It offers loyalty programs, treasure hunt and gift vouchers promotions, etc...<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQPU1NdvwYf4MsV2kg9fLzrCHYHchVYwWKf5LN9d58pNW7AKukXeAc254p-IMudnfYVtHXycmKuQFwFix-GuuJbIqOlv_sDcGGg2KEtswf1jT5NfZ_y_-6tKIF0FD8Y4nDCH9WRsTLGAN/s1600/Screen+Shot+2013-10-15+at+11.22.16+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQPU1NdvwYf4MsV2kg9fLzrCHYHchVYwWKf5LN9d58pNW7AKukXeAc254p-IMudnfYVtHXycmKuQFwFix-GuuJbIqOlv_sDcGGg2KEtswf1jT5NfZ_y_-6tKIF0FD8Y4nDCH9WRsTLGAN/s320/Screen+Shot+2013-10-15+at+11.22.16+PM.png" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The navigation is clear and simple: Taga will welcome you to Sociatag and take you through the process.<br />
<br />
I know that no matter how much I tell you about it, it won't be clear unless you try it yourself, or watch the below video:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/YRbTiAgv2Zc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
Most importantly, I want to express my pride of Wassim Al Hakim, the young and dynamic Lebanese guy who founded Sociatag, which I'm sure will reach for the stars!<br />
<br />
I hope you find this post as interesting and useful as I did myself.<br />
& I would certainly LOVE to know your feedback on Sociatag.<br />
<br />
Cheers!<br />

Personally, I hate the : Tell them what you are going to say, say it, tell them what you just said" technique. I find it boring, I lose interest at the very beginning.<br />
<br />
Instead, here's a 5-step process that enhances every presentation:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b45f06;">1- TEASE!</span><br />
- State the current cultural <b>situation</b>.<br />
- Briefly describe the<b> problem</b> for your business.<br />
- <b>Hint</b> at your answer to the problem.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b45f06;">2- Unveil the Mystery:</span><br />
In 10 seconds or less, state the <b>reason</b> why everybody gathered to listen to you.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b45f06;">3- The good stuff!</span><br />
Dive into the main points of your presentation (with supporting claims/ examples of course).<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b45f06;">4- The review:</span><br />
For people who missed some points or those who didnt get enough, review briefly your main points.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #b45f06;">5- The call to action:</span><br />
Now that the audience is hooked, don't leave them hanging. give them a clear and easy-to-follow call for action.<br />
<br />
All the above are keys to a good content presentation.<br />
<br />
The most important aspect is to stay <b>MEMORABLE</b>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4nZxkb1_jibP7XRAIH7DzmGtp_wxmI5_FV4_SCm3U35ZsKdX7xTWI0ViS8QKDlYvLFnE89pNNvEpearcuRHwakL50PYcqoJbns6yJZMFazMnk1ZbNZw4Uz7MR93K2B2yASRwuq5mTK0C4/s1600/memorable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4nZxkb1_jibP7XRAIH7DzmGtp_wxmI5_FV4_SCm3U35ZsKdX7xTWI0ViS8QKDlYvLFnE89pNNvEpearcuRHwakL50PYcqoJbns6yJZMFazMnk1ZbNZw4Uz7MR93K2B2yASRwuq5mTK0C4/s320/memorable.jpg" width="303" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">Record</span> the thoughts that are worth sharing in your next presentation, if you prepare your presentation by writing it, <span style="color: #999999;">write as you speak</span> otherwise you would sound too artificial. Also speak in the<span style="color: #999999;"> present tense</span>: <b>IS</b> is much more powerful than <b>WAS</b>.<br />
Try not to have more than <span style="color: #999999;">3 points</span> in your presentation, after 3, the brain is tired, bored, lost...<br />
A good tip is also to imagine a kid sitting in the back of the presentation room. That forces you to be <span style="color: #999999;">simple </span>and use easy to break sentences.<br />
Last but not least, now that we are living in an world where social media is the norm, create "twitterable" moments: clever headlines, golden nuggets and smart advice that you know will be shared with the rest of the world.<br />

I have occupied myself for the past 40 minutes adding H to the coca-cola website!<br />
Brilliant!<br />
You should try it yourself:<br />
<a href="http://www.ahh.com/">www.ahh.com</a><br />
<br />
<br />
They have launched 61 websites starting ahh.com and every time you add an h it directs you to a new website, where a new activity captures you!<br />

As much as I hate online pop ups and overwhelming advertisements, I love brilliant, innovative and original online ideas!<br />
<br />
Another good one is the volkswagen search engine ad!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Volkswagen also did the Volkswagen skip ad on youtube to promote the new Fusca:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They put an ad before the videos on youtube with a feature that is so common: "skip ad".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once you click on it... here's what happens!</div>

What inspires you?<br />
Nature? Superman? provocative women? rich people? Your mother?<br />
(yes, those were real answers...)<br />
<br />
Personally, what inspires me is someone who overcame a bad fortune and fulfilled his dream!<br />
I'm inspired by people who achieve, and most of all people who make a difference.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs" target="_blank">Steve Jobs</a> is a good example. He changed the world.<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Woolf" target="_blank">Virginia Woolf</a>: abused as a child, groundbreaking writer.<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway" target="_blank">Ernest Hemingway</a>: totally depressed, iconic author!<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Blunt" target="_blank">Emily Blunt</a>: stuttered! won a golden globe.<br />
and many others....<br />
<br />
Now there's this other kind of inspiration: I call it the short-term inspiration, as opposed to inspiration that changes your life and puts you on a drastically different path.<br />
<br />
For those of you (in the field) who have a temporary mental block and could use some inspiration,<br />
stroll through these pages, I'm sure something good will come out of there!<br />

At some point in my career, I was excited to work with a digital agency, I thought it must be the new dimension that I lack.<br />
Eager to learn "digital", my experience started with words like "lead generation", "content", "traffic", "SEO" etc...<br />
IT GOT ME OUT OF MY MIND! I was unable to grasp the meaning of these words and thought we didn't speak the same language...<br />
<br />
After a while, I discovered that all there is to it is to apply the same principle I have always been using in traditional advertising, online.<br />
<br />
For instance, what we call "<b>target audience</b>" and base our communication platform on, is called in digital language "<b>lead generation</b>". It's a database that consists of the names and addresses (or emails) of individuals/ corporations to obtain information for the purpose of expanding the scope of business, increasing sales, conducting specialised research, etc...<br />
In traditional communication you advertise where your target audience is.<br />
In digital you buy "leads" or get them from unpaid sources and target your consumers directly.<br />
<br />
In traditional advertising, you measure the <b>ROI</b> of your marketing i.e the contribution that the advertising campaign had on revenue and profits, plus the awareness it created among people.<br />
In digital, you measure the <b>effectiveness of content marketing</b>: it is <u>the intersection of awareness and lead generation.</u><br />
<br />
So <span style="color: #cc0000;">CONTENT MARKETING</span> is a key in today's marketplace.<br />
It certainly competes with traditional advertising. It has changed the way consumers research and buy products, that's why advertising agencies are increasing their budgets for content marketing because it helps them expand their reach online.<br />
<br />
In advertising language :) to better explain <b>Content</b>, it can take many forms:<br />
Articles, blog posts, editorials, email campaigns, newsletters, web content, info graphics, illustrations, photos, videos, tutorials, FAQs, webinars, e-books, etc....<br />
The goal from all the above is to attract and retain customers.<br />
<br />
An article that I read on <a href="http://www.marketo.com/infographics/content-marketing-vs-traditional-advertising/" target="_blank">marketo</a> shows 4 reasons why companies should use content marketing:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2nhUA8OvvDUX2Z2ij0gLkBAxFwwhZKYI8aQ6f8ZmlOk5Y6SnUXso-zzA0BWlixnCDHUj5aZXWqd2N9BzHj676RnNMj6CuyOT6pnnWl_KKwlNCmHwUQniMLxw2DldXOBNEEgLogJtjn4Pv/s1600/456.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2nhUA8OvvDUX2Z2ij0gLkBAxFwwhZKYI8aQ6f8ZmlOk5Y6SnUXso-zzA0BWlixnCDHUj5aZXWqd2N9BzHj676RnNMj6CuyOT6pnnWl_KKwlNCmHwUQniMLxw2DldXOBNEEgLogJtjn4Pv/s1600/456.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span><span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Content marketing process in 6 easy steps: </span><a href="http://www.pamorama.net/2013/06/16/a-beginners-guide-to-content-marketing-infographic/" style="font-size: x-small;" target="_blank">Source</a></h4>
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;"><b>1- Identify marketing objectives</b> (benchmark)</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><b>2- Understand your buyers </b>(define buying process stages)</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><b>3- Identify gaps</b> (what is most appropriate at each stage of the buying process? what is more important for buyers? what assets are missing?)</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><b>4- Build content</b> (key messages to deliver - set a standard for quality - consistency)</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><b>5- Organize distribution</b> (select the right channels - facilitate social sharing - build landing pages)</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><b>6- Measure ROI</b> (measure Web traffic, sales lead quality & social media sharing)</span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4F0dK1pLqFehOwbfQ7jPqUb93dqjCR12eX7CQCiA9ou40yIJPqtpy-QjW48uFRE9MPcypJ_uGkvhLndpSDBlIW4546VLO71NQFX_DiubTF4qyr0mckzsCFZAsuMxqxRaV7gq7ARTvvx_J/s1600/Screen+Shot+2013-09-01+at+6.15.12+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4F0dK1pLqFehOwbfQ7jPqUb93dqjCR12eX7CQCiA9ou40yIJPqtpy-QjW48uFRE9MPcypJ_uGkvhLndpSDBlIW4546VLO71NQFX_DiubTF4qyr0mckzsCFZAsuMxqxRaV7gq7ARTvvx_J/s320/Screen+Shot+2013-09-01+at+6.15.12+PM.png" width="160" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">How can we measure the effectiveness of content marketing?</span></h4>
According to <a href="http://www.pamorama.net/2013/08/24/content-marketing-how-to-measure-its-effectiveness-infographic/?goback=%2Egde_64854_member_268402098#%21" target="_blank">Pam Dyer</a>, Common measurements include:<br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Subscribers</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Fans</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Likes</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Traffic</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- SEO: your ranking and visibility + search as a traffic source.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Leads: Their quality and lifetime value</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Conversations: Sales, Subscribers and leads.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Sales: Volume, financial value and lenght of the sales cycle</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;">- Acquisition costs for users, leads and sales.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<br />
Bottom line, Content marketing grows your bottom line.<br />
It builds awareness, exposes new people to your brand.<br />
It inspires potential customers to engage, read, download, comment, share, etc...<br />
It amplifies traditional word of mouth and grows organically with time.<br />
<br />
To ensure the success of a content marketing strategy, we could measure the following:<br />
- ranking in search engine results pages<br />
- Number of first-time website visitors<br />
- Total page views<br />
- Visit durations<br />
- Social metrics: Likes, follows, +1s, pins, etc...<br />
- Social media referrals from Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc...<br />
<br />
The folks at <a href="http://www.brandpoint.com/" target="_blank">BrandPoint</a> illustrated it using the below infographic:<br />

<h2 style="text-align: left;">
"<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say" </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: 20px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Waldo_Emerson" target="_blank">Ralph Waldo Emerson</a></span></span></h2>
<br />
6 years ago, I was too shy and my voice was too low and intimidated every time I presented an idea to a client. Very soon I realised that it was a HUGE drawback and I won't be taken seriously until I do something about it.<br />
So a personal coach was assigned to help me, and was he special!<br />
Out of all the things he told me, one particular idea never left my mind:<br />
"When you're presenting, you're telling your client something that he doesn't know. He's paying money to hear what you have to say. So don't think of yourself as a junior because in this particular moment, he's a child absorbing the information you're giving him.<br />
So make it worthwhile and most of all make your presence memorable."<br />
<br />
That being said, here are some body language tips by <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/soappresentations?utm_campaign=profiletracking&utm_medium=sssite&utm_source=ssslideview" target="_blank">Soap Presentations</a> that will help you boost your presentations:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">1. BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE:</span><br />
<b>Open your chest and arms & keep your back straight</b>. This position will make you breathe better and you'll feel more relaxed.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2. MAKE YOUR AUDIENCE COMFORTABLE:</span><br />
Smile! <b>Simply smile at them</b>. A smile is the most powerful weapon.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">3. ENGAGE PEOPLE:</span><br />
gesture with your arms and hands, and <b>look your audience in the eye</b>. People pay attention and like people who look them in the eye. To keep their attention, <b>vary your gestures</b>, involve your head, arms and hands throughout the presentation.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">4. DEMONSTRATE AUTHORITY:</span><br />
Yes, authority. <b>Keep calm, and use small and stiff gestures</b>. This way people will trust you and view you as a confident person.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">5. LET THEM FOLLOW YOU:</span><br />
If you want to draw attention to a certain element of the presentation, point directly at it at look at it on the screen. <b>Your audience will follow your eyes and finger.</b><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">6. ENCOURAGE AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:</span><br />
Walk around and towards people. <b>People participate more when they have proximity to the speaker. </b>Also use the physical space you have available and walk your speech. It will show you are relaxed and you will be less boring.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">7. TO MAKE A HARD QUESTION SEEM EASIER:</span><br />
Pause, breathe slowly (this will give you time to think) and then answer while looking the questioner in the eye.<br />
<br />
85% of what you communicate is not with words. It's through the tone of voice, the way you stand (or sit) and plenty of other messages that your body involuntarily sends.<br />
With this in mind, and a GOOD CONTENT of course!! you definitely know ahead that you have a winning presentation.<br />
<br />
There's plenty more to know about this topic!<br />
If you're interested in a good book to read, I recommend <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lifes-Pitch-Stephen-Bayley/dp/0552156833" target="_blank"> Life is a Pitch</a>: How to sell yourself and your brilliant ideas.<br />

The one thing that bugs me about people the most is when they are immature or act like a child!<br />

<br />
<a href="http://earthship.com/blogs/author/biotecture/">Michael Reynolds</a> said that being childish can help you be a better marketer. It can develop you grow your company's sales. Here's why:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">1- Children are FEARLESS</span><br />
They don't ask themselves "What if" before trying anything.<br />
And when a marketer is fearless, some of the best marketing concepts come from ideas that may seem silly at first. It takes willingness to try new things without fear.<br />
Steve Jobs was a perfect example of that... and boy did he change the world!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilPB5LEijh-99DSCYBFAH28TpQAOm7QNUWmXejdMICN-2lyQaez7Eusy3h1rnocQOz_s1-mq6k3IF9s54BAfeGOIhpweG2jDTde5NLw08OdQHswJ8lb_Ix2LSUK8wPn7e0qlkVxQIs9V20/s1600/steve+jobs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilPB5LEijh-99DSCYBFAH28TpQAOm7QNUWmXejdMICN-2lyQaez7Eusy3h1rnocQOz_s1-mq6k3IF9s54BAfeGOIhpweG2jDTde5NLw08OdQHswJ8lb_Ix2LSUK8wPn7e0qlkVxQIs9V20/s320/steve+jobs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">2- Children are CURIOUS</span><br />
"Why" and "How" are the most commonly used words in a child's vocabulary. This is how they learn.<br />
The very same attitude can help a marketer become a master at delivering content to customers and prospects. This is the perfect way to have a rich content and diversified ideas and concepts that can drive winning marketing campaigns.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">3- Children BREAK things</span><br />
Taking things apart is how they learn! this is how good engineers started when they were kids: they used to take things apart to see how they worked.<br />
As a marketer, look for flaws in how your customers implement solutions and create controversy!<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;">4- Children tell the TRUTH</span><br />
They can be honest to the point of embarrassing you.<br />
Same way, telling the truth can promote a product better.<br />
A good example is Dudley Moore's "Crazy People", and here's my favorite part:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTJZEK4JP0k">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTJZEK4JP0k</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRcaM3ZzyHVequotSKPfx5fSivMwRXvIeaPMkFAZVtLNT5mWEiFbHVP6DZz3o3Y3zPow1cBVldJ_ISfrYWtMXaUVLBbYlMNXl-KyzSBaq7qdP9nI9w9AMOJ-NQc_3he4Z5FtxCjM53fwPC/s1600/volvo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRcaM3ZzyHVequotSKPfx5fSivMwRXvIeaPMkFAZVtLNT5mWEiFbHVP6DZz3o3Y3zPow1cBVldJ_ISfrYWtMXaUVLBbYlMNXl-KyzSBaq7qdP9nI9w9AMOJ-NQc_3he4Z5FtxCjM53fwPC/s320/volvo.jpg" width="248" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
So the bottom line?<br />
Don't be afraid to act like a child, once in a while.<br />
<span style="color: #999999;">"Try new ideas without fear of failure. Ask lots of questions. Uncover what's broken, and be-bold about telling the truth when you find it. With this attitude you will enjoy a never-ending flow of content ideas, campaign concepts, grateful followers, leads, and customers that trust your brand".</span><br />
<br />
Cheers!</div>

Hellos Fellows!<br />
<br />
First allow me to introduce myself:<br />
My name is Fidele, I'm a creative in the advertising field, I love life and I love fun!<br />
After doing 10 years in ad agencies, the moment has arrived for the bird to leave the flock so here I am starting something on my own!<br />
<br />
Being on your own is a big challenge.<br />
I have my current clients because they believe in me.<br />
But how do I keep the spark in our relationship?<br />
<br />
Obviously, they do keep me on my toes. I need to stay focused and drive their business forward.<br />
So yes... I have a big challenge ahead: a challenge to become better.<br />
<br />
This takes me directly to the reason why I started this blog.<br />
<br />
You probably know already the catch phrase "<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Where's the beef?</span></b>" it was originally a slogan for Wendy's (fast food chain in the US) in the advertisement that featured <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clara_Peller">Clara Peller</a>.<br />
Then it became an all-purpose phrase questioning the substance of an idea or a product.<br />
<br />
So while I'm paving my way into becoming a better person, a better professional and hopefully reach a phase where I can make a difference, no matter how small it is... I have decided to share this path with you, share my readings, my discoveries, and how they made me better each day...<br />
